Slip Slidin’ Away, the title of American singer-songwriter, Paul Simon’s, 1978 Gold Record is the descriptive for the pavement failure we encountered at this DFW senior facility. The concrete pavement Fire Lane and the concrete embankment were slowly sliding down the steep incline adjacent to the property, and both were in need of complete reconstruction.
Generally, North Texas is relatively flat, and issues like these are typically found in our other service areas such as Austin, San Marcos, New Braunfels, or San Antonio, all of which are located on the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country. This property though is located in North Richland Hills on the eastern edge of the Iron Horse Golf Course with its picturesque setting similar to what one would find in the hill country.
What looked like a simple concrete driveway repair at first glance, was in fact, a far more involved project. With the unstable sub-soil causing the pavement and retaining wall to shift, it was determined by the owner that this project would require an engineer’s design and oversight, so with drawings and permit in hand, the Pavement Services Corporation’s team went to work.
The engineered drawings called for a complete demolition of the existing Fire Lane concrete pavement, guardrail, retaining wall, tree removal, and 8” excavation. Once the demo was complete, the exposed subgrade was compacted and then covered with a layer of 8” TxDot flex-base material. Twenty, 12” diameter concrete piers were then installed to a depth of 25’ to support the downhill side of the driveway, and a catch basin and headwall were installed to accommodate drainage.
To prevent future movement, the PSC crew constructed 7.5” of Portland cement concrete pavement with 300 linear feet of a grade beam and thickened edge on the downhill side. Lastly, a decorative concrete/stone veneer retaining wall was built and a highway grade guard-rail was installed along the outer edge of the driveway for safety to complete the project.
With this being a detailed, capital improvement project, PSC worked with the scope provided by a civil engineering firm that also ran the oversight of the performance of the work and verified our crew’s work was performed to specifications for the
